The second Global Major Challenge Summit, co-sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Engineering, and theRoyal Academy of Engineering, was held in Beijing on September 15-17,2015. The summit brought together nearly 800 scientists, engineering and industry leaders and students around the world. Representativesexchanged ideas on how to solve the most pressing and significant challenges in today's world through engineering technology. From the school of Mechanical Engineering, Zhejiang University, undergraduate students, Shi Yukun, and Mu Junchen, as the core team members of theHERO team participated in the Student Day with the “Air HandWashing Device”, and stood out among other 15 top universities.
TheStudent Day Competition module is an important part of the global challenge Summit and is designed to encourage young students to become the next generation of engineering leaders to meet the major global challenges. A total of 15 world-famous university teams from MIT, Cambridge, Duke, and Imperial College participated in the student day competition. Each team needs to propose and improve an idea and creative plan based on major challenges such as energy, education, pollution control, etc. The Air Hand Washing System, based on the principle of secondary atomization, relies on its own gravity to save 91% of water while ensuring cleanliness, saving energy and saving water. With its ingenious creativity and design, the work was well received by the judges of the Plenary and won the first place in the competition. Zhou Ji, Dean of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, C. D. Mote, Dean of the National Academy of Engineering, and Richard Williams, Associate Dean of the Royal Academy of Engineering, presented the awards to the team members. The 12th CPPCC StandingCommittee, Director of the Foreign Affairs Committee and former Zhejiang University President Pan Yunhe congratulated the students.
The creation of the “AirHand Washing Device” of the HERO team of Zhejiang University began with the “National College Student Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Competition”. It was started in August 2014. It broke the boundary during the preparation process and integrated mechanical, energy and electrical. Control and other professional students have crossed and cooperated closely. It took a year to complete the work. The undergraduate students, Shi Kunkun and a Junchen, are mainly responsible for the institutional realization of the work and are committed to turning the team's vision into an actual automation device. They used the electromechanical expertise they learned and worked with their teammates to complete the theoretical analysis of the product's principle analysis and structural parameter calculation. In the preparation process, they completed the mechanical structure design of the model. In a year's time, each member of the team invested a lot of spare time, self-learning professional knowledge, improving design several times, and perfecting their own works. In this process, the two students responsible for the physical production of the device, have shown sufficient responsibility and devoted efforts to solve the problem. Combining the various strengths of the students in different disciplines of the team, and the mutual complementarity of skills in each other, the works were perfected. Through this major transnational challenge, the HERO team of Zhejiang Universityembodies the advantages of interdisciplinary and close cooperation, and fully demonstrates the ambition seeking innovation and unity, which is a model for all students.
