Abstract:
Commonly known as 3D Printing, Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a suite of computer automated processes that fabricate three-dimensional physical objects layer by layer from Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models. AM offers significant advantages over conventional manufacturing processes in producing one-of-a-kind parts or small batches, especially for those with geometric and/or material complexities. It holds great promise for the future as a tool-less, light-out manufacturing technology for advanced components and products made of metals, polymers, ceramics and composites. This seminar will first give an overview of AM technologies and their working principles, along with an overview of AM markets including products, materials and services. A summary of AM advantages and representative applications in the automotive, healthcare and other industries will the follow. Some recent advances in AM technologies, including those due to Missouri S&T research efforts, will then be presented. Finally, future AM research and innovation opportunities will be envisioned.
