On March 7th, at the invitation of Zhu Yi and Peng Tao, the AcademicForum on Additive Manufacturing, organized by the State KeyLaboratory of Fluid Power and Mechatronic Systems and the School ofMechanical Engineering, was successfully held. The academic forum consisted of academic conferences and exchanges. On the morning of the 7th, 411 conference room at Yuquan Campus, Professor DavidBourell from the University of Texas at Austin, Professor Ming C. Leufrom the University of Missouri University of Science and Technology, and Dr. Li Yang from the University of Louisville respectively on different directions of additive manufacturing and their own research. The academic report was hosted by Prof. Mei Deqing, deputy director of Guozhong and secretary of the School of mechanical engineering. The participants included Professor Zhao Peng, associate professor Wang Yancheng, Associate Professor Zhu Yi, Dr. Peng Tao, and more than 20 graduate students.

In the beginning, Professor Mei Deqing first extended a warm welcome to three guests and gave a brief introduction to School profile.

ProfessorDavid L. Bourell

Subsequently, Professor David L. Bourell gave an academic report on additive manufacturing. Professor Bourell first briefly reviewed the history of research and development of additive manufacturing technology. From the invention of electronic computers 150 years ago to modern times, the proportion of additive manufacturing has become higher and higher, and in the past ten years, there has been phenomenal growth. Polymers and metals are important raw materials for additive manufacturing and are subject to process requirements. Since the energy density of conventional method can not fully meet the requirements of quality of the part, Bourell introduced Professordetail based (laser and part bed temperature) of the new method the total thermal exposure part, which is sufficient to predict the properties of a more complete range of mechanical parts.

ProfessorMing C. Leu

The second speaker was Professor Ming C. Leu from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology. At the beginning of the report, he first outlined the working principle of additive manufacturing, followed by the introduction of the market in terms of products, materials, and services, and demonstrated the application of additive manufacturing in automotive, healthcare, and other industries. After that, Professor Leu introduced some of the latest development additive manufacturing technology and innovation in the future work of additive manufacturing technology prospects.

Dr.Li Yang

In the final report, Dr. Li Yang introduced the development and application of additive manufacturing. Since 1993, in light quantify the additive manufacturing design field, the focus of research focused on the design and implementation of lightweight structures for biomedical fields. In terms of geometric design, much work has been devoted to determining the non-ideal boundary conditions of a finite-size honeycomb structure design and its impact on various properties of the structure. In manufacturing production, the unique additive manufacturing process characteristics, material properties, and geometric features associated with lightweight construction are vital. Materials used for additive manufacturing lightweight properties should be considered a unique class of heterogeneous materials that are integrated as-independent factors during the design phase. After the end of each speaker's speech, the teachers and students present and the presenter actively exchanged and discussed the academic content, and the students also asked questions to the presenter about their interests.

In the afternoon, an additive manufacturing exchange meeting was held in the conference room of the hydraulic old building. The participants included three American scholars and laboratories who were engaged in additive manufacturing. The exchange meeting was hosted by Dr. Zhu Yiand, Dr. Peng Tao. First of all, the two national teachers introduced the laboratory's research on metal additive manufacturing, polymer manufacturing, and bio-manufacturing, and then several experts discussed the research direction, progress, and cooperation related issues. After the meeting, the three experts visited the relevant laboratories of Guozhong Laboratory in Yuquan Campus and Zi JingangCampus.

This academic forum not only expands the international influence of the relevant research of the State Key Laboratory but also establishes the foundation for future international cooperation and exchange.
