主题:Using Bio-mechatronics to Improve Human Movement
This presentation mainly discusses about Robotic Simulators for Neurological Examination Training .This work has considerable importance for public health as the results will lead to novel training simulators to replicate abnormal muscle tone behaviors typically observed in patients with neurological disorders, such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and Parkinson’s disease. For example, stroke is a major contributor to movement disability in both China and US affecting millions; It is the #1 cause of death in China and the overall stroke rate is higher among Chinese than in white Europeans.
Biography
Prof Elizabeth T. Hsiao-Wecksler is a professor and Willett Faculty Scholar of Dept of Mechanical Science & Engineering in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign(UIUC). She researches in two areas: 1) addressing issues of bulk, weight, control, and runtime, which are significant barriers for the development and use of portable powered orthotic devices. 2) developing new measurement tools to better quantify movement patterns and utilizing these tools to understand movement biomechanics of clinical and workforce populations. She has had a BS, MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, Rochester Institute of Technology and University of California-Berkeley respectively. She is now an Associate Head for Undergraduate Programs in UIUC, also a Co‐Course Director, Carle Illinois College of Medicine, Clinical Neuroscience Course. She is an AAAS member, an IEEE member, an WACBE member, an Pi Tau Sigma member,an ASME fellow, and an ASB fellow. She serves as the American Society of Biomechanics Program Chair and got many research honors such as New Investigator Recognition Award in Orthopedic Research Society and American Geriatrics Society in 1999, Honorable Mention ,UIUC Campus Award for Excellence in Guiding Undergraduate Research in 2005 and Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research in 2013. She also won Engineering Council Award for Excellence in Advising, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and in the list of teachers ranked as excellent in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
