ABSTRACT:
THz wave emission and detection have been received great attention in the last decades, thanks to the potential applications in medicines, pharmacies, biomolecules, protection of pollution, security and so on. In this talk, we will review variety of technology for THz emission, from traditional to recent developed methods, such as free electron lasers, optical pumping lasers and quantum cascade lasers. On the other hands, detection of THz wave is also a challenge for the THz applications. In addition to review the most developed pyroelectric detectors, hot electron bolometer, we present very interesting detectors based on the FET using the nano wires and graphenes. Detailed experiment results are presented and discussed. In the last part, we present a few realized applications and discussed some potential and prospective applications.

Jihua Xu received the Ph. D. degree of Physics from the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, Italy, in 1994. He was employed as a researcher associate in the Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China in 1977, where his work concerned in the laser physics and laser spectroscopy. He worked as a two-year visiting scholar in the International Center of Theoretical Physics, Italy in 1986. He became a researcher in the Scuola Normale Superiore in 1999. His main studies were in the field of laser interaction with matters, and electromagnetically induced transparency. His work is currently focused on the physics of intersubband transitions and the development of THz Quantum cascade laser and THz detectors, and their applications. He has published hundreds of papers in the international journals and meetings. He has trained tens of Ph.D and Ms.D students both in Italy and in China.
